This debate will see Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Ohio Senator JD Vance, the vice-presidential candidates for the Democratic and Republican parties respectively, face off in a pivotal discussion.
The event will be hosted by CBS News in New York City, with Norah O’Donnell, anchor of “CBS Evening News,” and Margaret Brennan of “Face the Nation” serving as moderators.
According to AP News, on Wednesday, CBS News extended an invite to both Walz and Vance to debate on four optional dates: September 17th or 24th and October 1st or 8th. Walz responded to the invite via his campaign account on X and said, “See you on October 1, JD.”
Vance accepted the October 1st invitation but also challenged Walz to meet him earlier on September 18th on CNN. The Kamala Harris-Walz campaign has not announced if Walz will participate in the suggested earlier debate.
Tim Walz, the Democratic candidate – brings a wealth of experience as a former teacher, Congressman, and now Governor of Minnesota. His tenure has been marked by a focus on education, healthcare, and economic development. Walz is known for his pragmatic approach and ability to work across the aisle, qualities that could be crucial in the vice-presidential role.
On the Republican side, JD Vance – a former venture capitalist and author of the bestselling memoir “Hillbilly Elegy,” represents a new wave of conservative leadership. Vance, who has been a vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump, emphasizes issues such as economic nationalism, border security, and a strong defense policy. His ascent in politics has been rapid, and he is seen as a fresh yet polarizing figure within the GOP.
The debate is expected weeks after the Sept. 10 top-of-the-ticket debate recently solidified between Trump and Harris on ABC News.
Trump has said he negotiated several other debate dates, on three different networks. Fox News has also proposed a debate between Harris and Trump to take place on Sept. 4, and NBC News is angling to air one on Sept. 25.
During an appearance in Michigan, Harris said she was “happy to have that conversation” about an additional debate.
The 2024 vice presidential debate is expected to cover a wide range of pressing issues:
Economy
Healthcare
Immigration
Climate Change
Foreign Policy
