After decades of being out of her daughter’s life, the biological mother of Olympic gold-medal gymnast Simone Biles is now looking to make amends.
In an interview with UK’s Daily Mail, Simone’s birth mom, Shanon, is begging for her forgiveness, despite their very painful past.
“It was hard to give up my kids, but I had to do what I had to do. I wasn’t able to care for them,” she explained. “I was still using and [my father] didn’t want me coming in and out of their lives when I wasn’t right.”
As many are aware, Simone entered foster care as a toddler while Shanon was battling drug and alcohol addiction. Simone’s maternal grandparents, Ron and Nellie, ultimately adopted her and younger sister Adria in 2003.
Despite their broken relationship, Shanon (who says she has been sober since 2007, according to TMZ Sports) has continued to support her daughter, recently throwing a party at her Columbus, OH home to celebrate Simone winning three gold medals and a silver medal at the Paris Olympics.

However, Shanon reveals that she has virtually no contact with Simone, missing out on milestones like the Olympics and her wedding to NFL player Jonathan Owens last year.
Still, Shanon is hopeful for a reconciliation, giving Simone the opportunity to reach out, if she chooses.
“I would like to make amends with Simone personally – I’m just waiting for her and Adria,” Shanon tells Daily Mail. “I speak to Adria more than I speak to Simone. I would just ask her to forgive me. Can we move forward? Don’t judge me on my past. Let’s move forward.”
She adds, “I’m waiting for the opportunity but I’m waiting on her to be able to come to me. Let’s sit down. I just have to be patient.”
