HelloBeautiful sat down with Sergio Hudson for an exclusive interview just a few hours before his Spring/Summer 2025 New York Fashion Week (NYFW) runway show. Amid a whirlwind of last-minute preparations, Sergio took a moment to talk about his passion for design, his newest collection, and his celebration of Black women.
With his signature gold nails and welcoming demeanor, Sergio invited HB to his green room for the conversation. He joked that he still had models to fit and finishes to make but was excited to show his collection to the world.
Sergio doesn’t just design for women – he celebrates us with every piece. His signature designs are all about amplifying the beauty and confidence that women, particularly Black women, exude. So, we had to ask: what about Black women continues to inspire him?
“I mean, magic, you know?” Sergio said with a smile. (We smiled back in our magic.)
“I was raised by a Black woman. I have a Black sister, I have Black daughters, and just the magic that Black women bring to the world is irreplaceable. You can’t mock it, and you can’t make it up. You can’t fake it. It’s so original.”
The beloved designer – who has dressed several prominent Black women from Kamala Harris and Michelle Obama to Keke Palmer and Tracree Ellis Ross – continued sharing how his clothes are also a source of Black women empowerment. As he put it, “When a Black woman feels confident, it’s like this spirit takes over that can conquer the world. And that’s the joy I get to experience daily.”
For his Spring/Summer 2025 collection, Sergio drew inspiration from the ’60s, particularly the iconic 1967 film Valley of the Dolls and the legendary women of that era.
“The colors, the time period, the jazz music—Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson, Dinah Washington—those women and their music really inspired this collection,” he explained.
One of Sergio’s favorite songs, Nancy Wilson’s “The Good Life,” specifically drove the collection. The celebrity favorite designer said he had the ballad on repeat as he created. He said, “You’re going to see that reflected in the collection: a really polished, put-together woman, but still forward.”
Sergio presented 38 looks, each embodying timeless sophistication, expert tailoring, and elevated elegance. From sequined gowns to tailored suits and chic midi-length dresses, the collection was everything! And for the first time, Sergio introduced menswear to the runway, surprising the audience with six standout looks.

When HB asked about his design process, Sergio said there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. The timing varies. “For me, like, to be completely honest, it can take six months, and sometimes I can do it in a few weeks, “the South Carolina designer said. “This one, I thought about it for a long time, and then when it finally clicked, I did it in like a month.”
Among the many pieces in the collection, Sergio’s favorite is a simple T-shirt.
Sergio shared, “If I had a favorite piece, it would be one of the more simple pieces: it is this cashmere T-shirt that I made. I think it’s so versatile, and I think women are going to love it, and men as well, because we’re launching men’s this season.”
As our conversation wrapped, Sergio quickly went from interview mode to designer mode. He turned to his team to look at an off-the-shoulder column-style gown. The gown looked perfect to us, but Sergio’s attention to detail was clear.
Sergio’s unwavering commitment to his craft, love of design and Black women, and shimmery gold nails were on display. And we loved every moment.
