There is no doubt that music is an integral part of black culture, and singers are a vital piece of that puzzle! Whether gone too soon or having left a legendary legacy, we want to reflect on black singers who have died in the last 10 years.
Singer-songwriter and musician Bobby Womack died June 27, 2014 at 70 years old.
“This Will Be” singer Natalie Cole—and daughter of legendary jazz artist Nat King Cole—died on Dec. 31, 2015 due to heart failure.
Guitarist and singer-songwriter B.B. King died on May 14, 2015 from a stroke.
Bobbi Kristina Brown was a singer and daughter of superstar parents Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown. She died at the age of 22 on July 26, 2015.
Multi-talented singer, instrumentalist, producer, and songwriter Prince fatally overdosed on April 21, 2016.
Jazz and gospel singer Della Reese died on Nov. 19, 2017 from Type 2 Diabetes.
Aretha Franklin, known as the “Queen of Soul”, was a singer-songwriter and pianist. She died on August 16, 2018.
“Ain’t No Sunshine” singer-songwriter Bill Withers died on March 30, 2020 due to cardiovascular disease.

Singer Sarah Dash died on Sept. 20, 2021. She was best-known for being a member of both Patti LaBelle & The Bluebelles and Labelle.
The Gap Band’s Ronnie Wilson (brother of Charlie Wilson and Robert Wilson) died on Nov. 2, 2021 following a stroke.
Wanda Young (middle)—1/3 of of Motown’s hit all-female group the Marvelettes—died on Dec. 15, 2021.
Jesse Powell, best known for his R&B hit song “You”, died Sept. 13, 2022.
Harry Belafonte was a groundbreaking singer, actor, and activist. He broke racial barrier’s as one of Hollywood’s very first black male leads in the 1950’s-1970’s. Belafonte died April 25, 2023.
“Queen of Rock ‘n Roll” Tina Turner (singer-songwriter) died at 83 years old on May 24, 2023.
Irish Grinstead of R&B girl group 702 (known for their hit “Where My Girls At”) died on Sept. 16, 2023.
Rudolph “Rudy” Bernard Isley (photographed on the left) was one of the founders of legendary music group The Isley Brothers. He died Oct. 11, 2023.
Mandisa was a Christian singer who got her start on American Idol in ’06. She died on April 18, 2024.
Legendary singer Frankie Beverly died Sept. 10th, 2024 at 77 years old.
