Saweetie has a great sense of humor but finds nothing funny about colorism—and she’s right. The Ice Princess put an X (formerly known as Twitter) troll in their place when they made tasteless comments about her benefiting from colorism.

The Shade Room captured the exchange.

“I bet Saweetie wakes up every morning, brushes her teeth, looks in the mirror, and thanks God for colorism,” the X user wrote.

The X user, who limited his tweet after it went viral, likely didn’t expect a response from the rapper, but she hit him with the classiest clapback.

“yikes, tasteless humor. nothing witty or clever about this whatsoever. matter of fact, joking about a serious psychological battle is never funny. if you don’t agree with my art that’s fine, but don’t identify me with a behavior that condones discrimination. because I don’t. thanks,” she wrote.

Saweetie explains how pretty privilege didn’t benefit her the way people think it did

The California native is one of the least problematic of the rap girlies, but she somehow always catches a stray. If she’s not defending herself against being a colorist participant, she’s explaining why her career wasn’t built on the backs of her famous family members.

Saweetie acknowledges she benefits from her looks. She calls it “pretty privilege,” but some may argue that it includes colorism. In a 2021 interview with Cosmopolitan, the 31-year-old beauty said she “won’t act like there isn’t a certain type of power that comes with people admiring your face.” But she argues that pretty privilege never worked in her favor.

In an interview with Power 106.1, the rapper says she saw the negative side of having good looks. “But it’s just like, for me, honestly, throughout my whole life, being pretty was kind of like, how do I say this…it wasn’t a privilege for me,” she said. “I was judged, rumors were made up about me, and it was kind of always working against me. And it’s just like, for me, I never thought of pretty as glamorizing my existence as a human being.”

People can’t help how they look when born, but they can acknowledge the benefits of carrying celebrated traits. From colorism to texturism, the world chooses to discriminate against anything that isn’t close to European standards. As a collective, we have a lot of unlearning to do. The sooner we eliminate the “isms,” the quicker we get to healing as a community. “What do you think?
