Six-time Grammy award winner BeBe Winans’ new Christmas movie “We Three Kings” is out now and we’re getting a look at who inspired him to start acting in the first place.
During an appearance on the Tamron Hall Show, Winans opened up about how his relationship with Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington encouraged him to launch a career in Hollywood of his own. He told Tamron it all started when Washington directed his first music video for “In Harms Way” in 1997. Winans said afterwards, Washington pulled him to the side and told him he had serious acting skills.
“He said, ‘I’m going to tell you this one time,” Winans lamented. “I said, ‘Oh, what did I do wrong?’ He said, ‘You’ve got some acting chops. You know how to act.’ And I looked at him and I said ‘Woah, woah. Denzel’s telling me.’ You don’t have to worry about it going out of this ear because I’m not going to let it go into this ear. It was just too much for me to say yes to because I wasn’t confident in that.”
However, Tamron made sure to point out that Winans exudes confidence. He said it took some growth to get there.
“We Three Kings” follows Winans’ character Lincoln as he attempts to reunite his estranged daughters for the holidays for the first time since their mother’s death. The girls eventually realize life is better when they are together.
Winans said he took on his father’s façade in order to play Lincoln and was even able to get his mom’s approval of the movie. The movie is somewhat of a family affair. His niece, Deborah Joy Winans, plays family friend Genelle.
In addition to his sit-down interview with Tamron, Winans also performed his original song from the film, “Wishing You a Merry Christmas.” The track contains lyrics such as “May all your dreams come true,” “Love is the reason for the season” and “So let the snow fall down and the wind blow,” making the song feel like a warm hug.
