As if the San Antonio Spurs weren’t already having a tough season, their leading talent is out for the rest of the season, as they sit in 12th place in the Western Conference.

ESPN‘s Tim MacMahon reveals that Victor Wembanyama has been shut down for the remainder of the 2024-25 season because he’s got deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, which occurs when a blood clot forms.

The Spurs released a statement about the decision, adding that the clot was found after Wemby returned to San Antonio following his participation in the All-Star Weekend festivities in the Bay Area.

“The San Antonio Spurs today announced that Victor Wembanyama has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. The condition was discovered when Wembanyama returned to San Antonio following the All-Star Game in San Francisco,” the Spurs’ official statement read. “Wembanyama is expected to miss the remainder of the 2024-25 regular season. The team will provide updates as appropriate.”

The reigning Rookie of the Year’s symptoms weren’t disclosed, but those with DVT typically have swelling and pain in the ailing area. According to ESPN, the seven-footer began to feel symptoms recently but was optimistic about his condition improving.

Blood clots are usually treated with blood thinners that help prevent them from getting bigger but they cant break up blood clots you already have. While on blood thinning medication, Wemby will be prone to bruising, and even stopping a small cut from bleeding can be difficult, which makes physical activities –like playing basketball– risky.

While more playing time would be great for Wemby as he develops his pro basketball skills and becomes the future face of the Spurs and, eventually, the league, the franchise is confident he’ll be ready to suit up when the 2025-26 season begins.

He’s got his entire career ahead of him, but one player on the team that doesn’t is 39-year-old Chris Paul, who said the news was difficult to hear.

“It’s tough,” Paul told ESPN. “Tough more than anything, I think for all of us, knowing how much he means to our team, but more so knowing how much he means to the game and how much he loves to play.”

See how social media is reacting to Wemby’s sophomore season getting cut short below.
