Six Dead After Helicopter Crashes in Hudson River Near Jersey City

A tragedy unfolded on Thursday afternoon when a Bell 206 helicopter carrying a family of tourists and a pilot crashed into the Hudson River near Jersey City, leaving all six occupants dead. The incident occurred around 3:15 PM, with eyewitness accounts describing the aircraft breaking apart mid-air before plunging into the water near the Holland Tunnel.

The passengers included five Spanish tourists, consisting of two adults and three children, along with the pilot. Videos shared on social media captured the chilling moments, showing the helicopter flipping upside down and quickly submerging beneath the river’s surface. Witnesses reported hearing a loud “snap” before the aircraft spun out of control and hit the water.

“I was in shock,” said local bystander Sara Jean Raymond, who called 911 but could not initially get through. Other witnesses described the crash lasting mere seconds, with some noting that the helicopter appeared to lose power before descending rapidly.

Emergency responders from the FDNY, NYPD, and other agencies raced to the scene, conducting extensive rescue and recovery operations by boat and helicopter. While first responders worked tirelessly, New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy expressed their condolences and pledged support to recovery efforts.

“This heartbreaking incident reminds us all of the preciousness of life,” said Governor Murphy in a statement. New York Governor Kathy Hochul added, “I join all New Yorkers in praying for the victims and their families.”

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Early reports suggest the helicopter was on a common tourist route, offering breathtaking views of the Statue of Liberty and New York City skyline, prior to the accident.

This fatal crash marks yet another horrific helicopter-related tragedy in the region, reigniting concerns about the safety of crowded airways in one of the world’s busiest cities. Authorities continue to urge caution in the area as investigative efforts proceed.
