Prime Video is getting festive with a fresh take on Christmas in their upcoming film, Christmas in Lagos. Starring the talented Shalom C. Obiago and breakout Nigerian artist Ayra Starr. Read more details about the project inside.
Christmas in Lagos promises to bring some serious holiday vibes, blending family, love, and the cultural vibrancy of Lagos during the holiday season, best known as “Detty December.”
The cast features Obiago, Teniola A. Aladese, Rayxia Ojo and Shaffy Bello, with on-screen appearances from one of the biggest names in Afrobeats, Arya Starr.
According to Variety, the film follows recently heartbroken Fiyin (Aladese), who’s convinced her best friend, Elo (Obiago), is the love of her life. Conflict starts when he arrives from New York, ready to propose to his secret girlfriend, Yagazie (Angel Anosike). Meanwhile, 59-year-old Gbemi (Bello) is torn between her boyfriend of two years (Wale Ojo) and an old flame and high school sweetheart (Richard Mofe Damijo). Finally, there’s London born and raised Ivie (Rayxia Ojo), who comes home to Lagos for the holidays with one dream: to have the Detty-est December possible. What she doesn’t count on is falling madly in love with Ajani (Ladipo).
The film directed by Jade Osiberu, who also directed the 2023 Prime Video’s Gangs of Lagos (the first Nigerian original film for Prime Video), is set to be a great blend of romance, drama, and the heartwarming essence of Christmas set against the energetic and colorful backdrop of Lagos. Christmas in Lagos is one of the last to be produced in partnership with Prime Video as they pause their recent reach into Nollywood, Africa’s booming film industry. It is also the first and only project to come out of Osiberu’s first-look deal with Amazon.
While there is no trailer for the film just yet, Osiberu offers a tiny sneak peek on what fans can expect. “We made the detty-ist, most beautiful, heartwarming Christmas film ever,” Osiberu reveals about her upcoming film in a short video posted on YouTube.
For audiences looking to celebrate Christmas from a different cultural lens, “Christmas in Lagos” is the movie to watch this holiday season. Expect gorgeous visuals, an authentic Nigerian Christmas experience, and a killer soundtrack to match, including music from Ayra Starr herself. This is a big moment for African cinema, and “Christmas in Lagos” is positioning itself as a must-see on every holiday watchlist.
Be sure to tune into Prime Video for its premiere this December and get ready for a Lagos Christmas you’ll never forget.
