The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is investigating the mysterious deaths of twin brothers Qaadir Malik Lewis and Naazir Rahim Lewis, 19, whose bodies were discovered at the summit of Bell Mountain in Hiawassee, Georgia, on March 8. Family members are in shock over their untimely deaths and are demanding answers.
In a statement published to the agency’s website Saturday, the GBI revealed that a pair of hikers found the teens deceased with apparent gunshot wounds shortly after 11 a.m., noting that the preliminary investigation found there deaths “to be a murder-suicide.” However, after a thorough review by the medical examiner, the GBI stated that while the autopsies have been completed, the official ruling and results were pending further forensic tests.
As the official cause of their deaths remain under investigation, family members connected to the boys, who hail from Lawrenceville, Georgia, find it difficult to believe the murder-suicide theory, insisting that Qaadir and Naazir shared a deep, loving bond.
“They’re very protective of each other. They love each other,” Rahim Brawner, the twins’ uncle, told NBC affiliate WXIA of Atlanta during an interview published March 15. “They’re, like, inseparable. I couldn’t imagine them hurting each other, because I’ve never seen them get into a fistfight before.”
According to the twins’ aunt, Samira Brawner, Qaadir and Naazir were supposed to be in Boston visiting friends, with a 7 a.m. flight booked for March 7, that they unfortunately missed. They were just shy of celebrating their 20th birthday.
Samira, questioned the results of the preliminary investigation and immediately suspected something was amiss. Perplexed by their deaths, she claimed that the twins had never even heard of Hiawassee, Georgia, which is located 90 miles north from their home in Lawrenceville. They were not avid hikers, she noted.
“We knew right away that wasn’t true,” Samira told WXIA of her suspicions surrounded the murder-suicide theory. “How did they end up out in the mountains? They don’t hike out there; they’ve never been out there,” she added. “They don’t know anything about Hiawassee, Georgia. They never even heard of Bell Mountain, so how did they end up right there?”
So far, no suspects have been linked to Qaadir and Naazir’s deaths. However, on March 18, the GBI revealed that they had arrested 42-year-old Scott Kerlin of Hiawassee, charging him with misdemeanor obstruction. Kerlin, a volunteer firefighter in Towns County, allegedly took photos of the Lewis twins’ death scene and shared them publicly.
Yasmine Brawner, another aunt of the beloved twins, hopes the family will receive answers soon. She’s confused as to what happened as she claimed they had a “huge support system.”
“We know them. They wouldn’t do anything like this. To say they did this to each other? No. Something happened in those mountains, and we want answers.”
Yasmine also launched a GoFundMe to help cover the funeral and expenses for Qaadir and Naazir. As of March 18, the campaign has raised $29,380. In the campaign bio, Yasmine reiterated her doubts surrounding the preliminary investigation’s findings.
“In recents new reports, it was claimed that they took their own lives. My nephews wouldn’t do this!” she wrote. “They came from a family of love, and twins wanted so much for their future, they had dreams of starting their very own clothing line.”
